The friendships formed while abroad can last a lifetime! Four years ago, Gilman Alumni Ambassador Jaylen Wingfield (Barbados, 2015) and Alumna Ayanna Gill (Barbados, 2015) participated in service-learning internships and academic courses. They recently reconnected to reminisce on their time in Barbados and how their abroad experiences shaped their professional journeys. Jaylen recently worked as a case planner for a foster care agency and he is currently pursuing a graduate degree in Social Work with a health concentration. Ayanna works as a Production Associate for ABC News where she is a contributor to Nightline News. Read the full blog on our website. #TravelTuesdays Original caption by Gilman Scholar Brianna Jenkins (India, 2010) @bbjenks ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “Absolutely unforgettable. - This summer I had the opportunity to take a Communications course in India. The Gurukula teaching method is one from ancient India in which students live with their “guru” or teacher for a period of time. We eat together, travel together, and engage in new experiences while our location serves as our classroom. From hotel lobbies to tiger reserves and even the Taj Mahal, everyday my classroom looked different, and I learned from my professor through life lessons and experiences. I was able to engage in many aspects of Indian culture as we traveled from the highest roads in the world located in the Himalayas, to the low valleys of Masinagudi. This picture however, captures a moment that I think describes my entire feeling towards this journey. Majestic, striking, and unbelievable.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ @exchangeourworld #GilmanScholarship #ExchangeOurWorld #StudyAbroad
